The club’s managing director Ian Ayre returned to Merseyside on Tuesday having spent the previous day in Spain, where he held talks with Suarez’s agent Pere Guardiola. Liverpool’s owner have sanctioned the deal but it remains to be seen whether the 26-year-old striker, who have scored 17 goals in 12 games since returning from his ten-match ban, will extend his stay at the club beyond 2016, when his current contract ends.
Suarez Wanted to Quit the Reds Last Summer After Arsenal Tabled a Bid of 40m Plus a Pound to Trigger His Release Clause. Reports suggest the club are willing to table a contract offer of close to £200,000 per week for the player, who was named the League Fans’ Player of the Year for 2013 on Monday. And the deal will make the Uruaguay international the highest paid Liverpool player ever.
Meanwhile, former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamman says it is just as important that Suarez commits emotionally to the club as signs a new contract. “I want him to stay, but there needs to be clarity. He has got to understand what it means to be committed,” Hamman told Talksport.
Suarez’s relationship with leading figures at the second-placed team is said to have improved significantly since he attempted to force a move to Arsenal last summer. “He is really happy here. He is playing with smile and enthusiasm. The whole profile of the club fits him perfectly. The supporters idolise him and you can see that connection here,” said manager Brendan Rodgers recently.
