Box Office: 'Guardians Of The Galaxy' Tops Global Chart

'After the Expendables 3' fails to make much noise, losing to 'Guardians' in Russia. Disney and Marvel Studios' offbeat superhero tentpole Guardians of the Galaxy zoomed past the $400 million mark in its third weekend of play at the global box office, including an early domestic gross of $222.3 million. At this pace, it is set to surpass Transformers: Age of Extinction ($243.3 million) and become the summer's top earner in North America.

Guardians topped the weekend global chart, followed by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and How to Train Your Dragon 2, which won the weekend internationally thanks to a $25.9 million debut in China. The sequel's opening in China was eight times bigger than 2010's How to Train Your Dragon.

The Expendables 3 struggled to make much noise, both domestically and internationally, although it has yet to roll out in numerous markets. In Russia, the threequel opened to only $3.8 million, compared to $8 million for the last entry in the action franchise. Expendables 3 placed No. 3 in Russia behind holdover Guardians, which took in $5.1 million.

Period epic The Admiral: Roaring Currents and Pirates both continued to prosper in South Korea, with Admiral hitting $110 million.
