The Golden Eaglets have been handed a bumper cash reward after defeating Mexico 3-0 in the Final of the Fifa Under-17 World Cup. The players were paid an increased bonus of $7000 each for emerging victorious in the final, adding to the $4000 they received for defeating Sweden in the semi-final.
The increase in the bonus was made possible by the Sports Minister, Bolaji Abdullahi, who made a financial intervention to help augment the bonus arrangement of the NFF.
Each member of the team received $500 for the three group games, while $1000 instead of the planned $750 was handed out for the second round victory over Iran.
The players also received $2000 instead of the pre-arranged sum of $1000 for beat Uruguay in the quarter-final. The chief coach of the team, Manu Garba, received double the amount that was paid to the players in every stage of the competition.
